Travel

In December 2024, I visited India for the third time. Although I still can't get used to the pollution and chaos of Delhi, I've come around to appreciating its resillience. Visiting the north east hill towns on the other hand, like Darjeeling, Mirik, Bungkulung, etc. was really fun, in part because it's still quite uncommercialized (most tourism is local; there are very few foreign tourists). Which was surprising to me, given that the British used the north east hills as a place to vacation during its imperialist India era. This area is also interesting because you get to experience both Indian and Nepali culture, as it's inhabited by mostly Indian Gorkhas (Nepali Indians). You can also visit Bhutan as it's only a few hours drive from the hills. The downside is that Bhutan charges a hefty tax for foreigners looking to stay there. For example, US passport holders have to pay $200.00 USD / day to stay in Bhutan. This doesn't include accommodation, food, or other expenses. You'd think that they would want to promote tourism, but it turns out the Bhutanese are quite happy the way they are. In 2022, they had the highest GNH (Gross National Happiness) in the world at 0.781. One last fun fact about Bhutan: in the 1970s, the 4th King of Bhutan stated, “Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross Domestic Product.”
